Nearly in every subject that talks about solving a problem we find a self help tool, guide, manual…etc. Does self help work in anxiety disorder?

Come to think of it the only way for someone to overcome anxiety disorder is through self help. Doctors of all disciplines, experts, ex-sufferers, and the people around you can only provide guidance and support. The way out is only in ones hands.

When we look for self help programs, we must be careful of a couple of things. The first is the term "self help" itself. When we mention self help it means that there are other programs that are not self help.

All natural methods are considered self help. The only part that we can accept as not self help is medication regardless of it is chemical or herbal.

Medication in general does not help you directly to overcome your anxiety disorder. It merely suppresses the symptoms. Once you are off the medication, the symptoms come back.

The other thing that we need to take note of is the distinction between overcoming anxiety on one side and other terms such dealing with your anxiety, controlling your anxiety and other similar terms.

Dealing and controlling your anxiety does not mean overcoming or ending your anxiety. It normally means dealing with an attack when it happens.

Those methods that guide the person on how to deal with an anxiety attack could become a very good substitution for medication. A substitution that is highly encouraged we must add.

Here is one obovious example of self help tips to control your anxiety attacks:

Continuous repetitions of those methods could lead to the reprogramming of the fear triggers that were initially set to ignite the attack.

We must be aware though that such methods that help us deal and control our anxiety attacks do not target the fear triggers directly. They act exactly like a medicine to suppress the symptoms. They are better than a medicine since they do not have side effects.

Accordingly self help anxiety disorder programs are anxiety natural treatments that should help us overcome our disorder not just deal or control the anxiety attacks when they occur.
