To help a patient de-escalate the anxiety the most usual technique used is
The patient is told to place their feet flat on the floor. Focus on the reality of what the floor feels like under their feet and how solid the sensation is. We may ask the patient to hold something with texture such as a stress ball and then ask for them to describe what the ball feels like.
We use any of the five senses. If a person feels a sense of safety with the aroma of coffee, we might suggest they make a "medicine" bag with coffee grounds to wear about their neck to inhale when ever they feel anxious. Music or nature sounds often calms a certain patient.
Getting the patient to relax may involve meditation, beginning with breathing. The technique a professional uses will depend on the patient and how well he/she responds to certain things. Some people respond better to various touch, others to sounds and still others to another sense, such as being able to envision the ocean or sunset.
Sometimes a person will respond to talk therapy but it is usually one of the other methods that must come first before a person is able to engage in talk therapy.

What you are talking about is "talk" therapy in which people who know no better try to intellectually urge others to pretend that they are not experiencing what they are experiencing. If the people do not begin to act and think of themselves as OK…. they are referred to some psychiatrist who serves as a licensed drug dealer.
This nation is on a long slide into hell and modern mental health is doing all it can to facilitate and expedite this drop into chaos, pain and suffering by a continuing denial of the Esoteric in Man. That which is killing America is a century of disinformation fed to the population by "BS&bp" [Behavioral Science and the oxymoron "behavioral psychology"].
