It turns out that what we have initially expected was true. Anxiety Physical Symptoms is a huge topic. We have already talked about four anxiety symptoms and we still have quite a few more symptoms to cover. In this article we are going to discuss swallowing problems and difficulties as the fifth anxiety physical symptom.

Before starting our research on the topic, we were concerned that we might not find a good amount of material that would be enough to cover a stand alone article and we started looking if we can add one more symptom to talk about along with this one. When we started searching about swallowing and its problems we realized that we are in front of big topic. We even found an anxiety type that is called Swallowing Pill anxiety. Therefore, we are starting to think that this should have its own category in our blog and we should research for specific remedies to this specific anxiety. This is for our future plans and now let us get back to our subject.

Swallowing difficulty usually is felt high in the neck or lower down, behind the chest bone which is called "sternum." To know exactly what sternum is the Wikipedia definition goes as follows: "is a long flat bone located in the center of the thorax (chest). It connects to the rib bones via cartilage, forming the rib cage with them, and thus helps to protect the lungs, heart and major blood vessels from physical trauma."

Most people might take swallowing for granted, but for who suffer the difficulty of swallowing makes every meal a challenge. Such swallowing problems or difficulties can be caused by emotional distress such as anxiety. This sensation that food is stuck in the throat might leave a person with the feeling of choking, or as if there is a lump in the throat. Such problems with swallowing does not only include food, but also liquid or even pills.

Such Swallowing difficulty varies from not being to move substance from your mouth to your stomach at one end, on the other end it can mean not able to swallow at all. Swallowing difficulties regardless of their level are something that definitely need professional health care help.  But you really need not worry if this happened a couple of times as the cause could simply be that you did not chew your food good enough or that you are eating fast.

The following symptoms are usually the result of swallowing difficulty:

1- Chest pain

2- food stuck in the throat

3- heaviness

There are several causes of swallowing difficulty:

Problems that are related to the upper areas of the mouth and throat include:

  • Emotional or Anxiety Disorders
  • Tumors
  • Esophageal Webs: The Wikipedia definition for the Esophagus is: The esophagus or oesophagus, sometimes known as the gullet, is an organ in vertebrates which consists of a muscular tube through which food passes from the pharynx to the stomach. The Wikipedia definition for Esophageal webs is: Esophageal webs are thin (2-3mm) membranes of normal esophageal tissue consisting of mucosa and submucosa. They can be congenital or acquired. Congenital webs commonly appear in the middle and inferior third of the esophagus, and they are more likely to be circumferential with a central or eccentric orifice. Acquired webs are much more common than congenital webs and typically appear in the cervical area
  • Cervical Spine Disease: From spine-health.com we have found the following description: Cervical disc degeneration is a common cause of neck pain, most frequently felt as a stiff neck. Cervical degenerative disc disease is much less common than disc degeneration in the lumbar spine because the neck generally is subjected to far less torque and force. Nonetheless, a fall or a twisting injury to the disc space can spur degeneration, and accumulated wear and tear on the disc over time can also lead to neck pain caused by disc degeneration

Nerve and muscle problems such as:

  • Stroke
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Infections, Such as Polio and Syphilis Polymyositis
